That is why this class spends its first session on cutting and seam allowance rather than on design. Once your quarter inch is genuinely a quarter inch, everything else in quilting becomes straightforward.

What the course covers
Cutting
Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat. Squaring fabric, cutting accurate strips, and sub-cutting. Blade safety taught first.
The quarter inch
We measure the actual seam allowance your machine and foot produce and adjust until it is right. Assuming it is correct is the most common quilting mistake.
Piecing
Chain piecing, pressing direction, nesting seams, and squaring blocks. You build a sampler of blocks that increase in difficulty.
Assembly
Joining blocks, sashing, and borders that do not ripple.
Quilting and binding
Basting the three layers, walking foot quilting, and a double fold binding with mitred corners.

A block of the week approach building a lap sized quilt. Teaches the widest range of techniques.

We measure your seam allowance rather than trusting it
A quarter inch foot does not guarantee a quarter inch seam. Needle position, foot manufacturing tolerance, and thread thickness all shift it. Every student tests and calibrates their own seam on the machine they are using, in the first session.
Precision is taught before design
Errors in quilting compound. A block that is an eighth of an inch small is a quarter inch out across two blocks and an inch out across a row. Cutting and seam accuracy come first for that reason.
You finish the quilt, not just the top

No. A domestic sewing machine with a straight stitch and a walking foot is enough for everything in this class, and machines are provided.
Do I need to buy a rotary cutter and mat?
Not to start. Cutting equipment is available in class. We will advise what to buy if you decide to continue at home.
Why do my quilt blocks come out the wrong size?
Almost always the seam allowance. A quarter inch foot does not guarantee a quarter inch seam, and small errors compound across a block. We test and correct this in the first session.
I have a finished quilt top I never quilted. Can you help?

What weight batting suits the Austin climate?
