Almost everyone who walks into a first sewing class is worried about the same two things: that they will be the least experienced person in the room, and that the machine will do something alarming. Our beginner classes are built around removing both worries in the first twenty minutes.
You sit down at a machine that is already threaded, already tested, and already set to a straight stitch. You sew on scrap fabric before you sew on anything that matters. By the end of the first session you have threaded the machine yourself, wound a bobbin, sewn a straight seam, turned a corner, and finished something you can take home.

How the first course runs
Session one, the machine
Threading, bobbin winding, stitch selection, seam allowance, straight seams, corners, and reverse. You finish a lined tote bag or a zipped pouch.
Session two, accuracy
Pressing as you sew, pinning and clipping, curves, and why a quarter inch that drifts by a sixteenth ruins a finished garment.
Session three, closures
Buttonholes and a basic zip. This is the session that most self-taught sewists never get past on their own.
Session four, your project
You choose. Most people bring a cushion cover, a simple skirt, or a repair they have been avoiding.
Which beginner route suits you
Small group beginner course
Four sessions, six students maximum. The most common choice, and the cheapest way to cover the basics properly. You learn as much from other people's questions as your own.
Private one-to-one
The same ground covered faster, at your pace, on your machine if you prefer. Better if you are nervous, left handed, working around a disability, or on a deadline.
Machine basics only
A single short session if you already sew a little and only want to stop fighting your own machine.

You finish something in session one
A first class that ends with a bag of samples is a class most people never return from. Every beginner course here is structured so that you leave the first session holding a finished, usable object that you made from flat fabric. It is the single strongest predictor of whether someone keeps sewing.
Six students, not sixteen
Class size is capped at six. When a bobbin jams in a class of sixteen you wait, lose the thread of the lesson, and quietly decide sewing is not for you. At six the instructor reaches you before your momentum goes.
Machines are provided and maintained
Every machine is threaded and test-sewn before class. You are never asked to bring equipment, and you are never learning on a machine with a timing fault that makes you think the problem is you. If you want to learn on your own machine, bring it and we will service-check it first.
Learning to sew in Austin
Austin makes a genuinely good sewing city. The humidity that ruins some crafts does not bother fabric, and the city has a dense supply of material within a short drive, from the chain stores on Burnet Road through to the fabric and trim shops south of the river.
It also means most beginners here arrive with a specific project rather than a vague ambition. In practice the three that come up most often are alterations to clothes that nearly fit, costume and cosplay work driven by the city's convention and festival calendar, and home textiles. We teach the fundamentals in an order that gets you to your own project as quickly as possible.
Common Questions
Do I need to bring my own sewing machine?
No. Machines are provided, threaded, and tested before every class. If you would rather learn on your own machine you are welcome to bring it, and we will check it over before you start.
I have literally never sewn before. Is this too basic for me?
No, it is exactly the right level. The beginner course assumes no experience at all and starts with threading the machine.
Are materials included?
Thread, needles, and the fabric for your first project are included. For later projects you choose your own fabric and we will tell you exactly what to buy and how much.
How long before I can make my own clothes?
Most people sew a simple garment such as an elastic waist skirt within the four session beginner course, then move to our garment construction class for fitted clothes with zips and linings.
What if I miss a session?
Tell us as early as you can and we will move you into the same session on another course date at no charge.
