Private Sewing Lessons in Austin
A private lesson is the right choice when a group class does not fit the problem. That is usually one of three situations: you have a specific project with a deadline, you are stuck on one technique and do not want to sit through the rest of a course, or a group setting would make you tense enough that you would not learn anyway.
Lessons are booked individually rather than as a fixed course, so the content is decided by what you bring. Some people book one session to solve a single problem and never come back, which is a perfectly good outcome.

How a private lesson works
Tell us the problem first
When you book, describe the project or the technique. This matters more than it sounds, because it lets us have the right feet, needles, and interfacing ready before you arrive.
Bring the actual thing
The garment, the pattern, the fabric, the machine, or the half finished project that went wrong. Working on the real object beats working on a sample.
Work it through together
You sew and we coach. We do not take over the machine, because a lesson where the instructor does the hard part teaches nothing.
Leave with the next steps written down
You get a written summary of what we covered and what to do next, so you can finish at home.
Lesson formats
Single session
One focused session on one problem. The most common booking, and often all that is needed.
Block of sessions
Better for learning a whole skill such as fitted garment construction, where you need work between sessions.
Small private group
Bring two or three friends and share a session. Cheaper per person and often more fun, provided everyone is working at a similar level.
Project rescue
You bring something that has gone wrong. We diagnose whether it is recoverable, and if it is, we fix it together.

Private sessions are not a fixed syllabus delivered one to one. You describe the project or the sticking point at booking, and the session is prepared around it, down to having the right presser foot, needle type, and interfacing ready before you walk in.

The instructor does not take the work off you and finish it. That produces a good looking result and no learning. You operate the machine for every step, including the parts that are difficult.
You leave with it written down
Every private lesson ends with a written summary of the steps covered and what to do next. Techniques learned once and not recorded are usually gone within a fortnight.
Private tuition across the Austin metro
Private lessons are the format that travels best across the metro, because a single scheduled session is worth a drive in a way that a weekly evening course often is not. Students book private sessions from Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, and Dripping Springs where a weekly commitment on I-35 or 290 would be unrealistic.
If you are coming from further out, ask for a longer single session rather than two short ones. Two hours of continuous work on one project gets far more done than two separate hours, and it means one drive instead of two.

Can I learn on my own sewing machine?
Yes, and for private lessons it is often the better choice, because you learn the machine you will actually use. Bring it along and we will check it over at the start.
I only need help with one technique. Can I book a single lesson?
Yes. Single sessions are the most common private booking and there is no requirement to buy a block.
Can I bring a project that has gone wrong?
Yes. Bring it as it is, unpicked or not. We will tell you honestly whether it is recoverable before you spend a session on it.
Can two or three of us share a private lesson?
Yes, as long as everyone is working at roughly the same level. It costs less per person than individual sessions.
Do you teach beginners privately, or only experienced sewists?
Both. Beginners often choose private lessons when a group setting would make them uncomfortable, or when their schedule will not fit a fixed course.
