Sewing Class
Pattern Drafting and Fitting Classes in Austin
A commercial sewing pattern is a starting point, not a finished instruction. It is drafted for a set of measurements that belong to nobody, and the standard ease, shoulder slope, and dart placement assume a body shape that may not be yours.
This class teaches you to close the gap between the pattern and your actual body. You learn to take accurate measurements, compare them to a pattern's finished measurements, and make the adjustments that produce a garment that genuinely fits. For students who want to go further, we cover drafting a basic bodice and skirt block from scratch.
What is included
- Taking your own measurements accurately, including the ones most people skip
- Reading the information on a commercial pattern that tells you how it is meant to fit
- Full bust, small bust, broad back, and sway back adjustments on paper
- Toile fitting: making a test garment in cheap fabric before cutting the real thing
- Drafting a basic bodice block and skirt block from your measurements
- Grading between sizes when your upper and lower body are different sizes
Who this class is for
- Sewists whose garments come out technically well made but do not fit.
- Anyone between standard sizes, or with a different upper and lower body size.
- People whose bodies are not well served by commercial pattern sizing.
- Sewists who want to design their own garments rather than follow a pattern.
What the class covers
Measuring
Every measurement that matters for garment fit, taken on your own body with help. Including the measurements most home sewists skip: high bust, back width, and shoulder slope.
Pattern adjustment
Comparing your measurements to the pattern's finished measurements. Full bust, small bust, broad back, sway back, and grading between sizes.
Toile fitting
Cutting and sewing a test garment in cheap calico. Fitting it on your body and transferring the corrections back to the paper pattern.
Block drafting
Drawing a basic bodice block and skirt block from your own measurements. These are the foundation you modify for every future garment.
Two routes through this class
Pattern fitting
For sewists who want to keep using commercial patterns but make them fit properly. Covers measuring, adjustment, and toile fitting.
Block drafting
For sewists who want to draft from scratch. Covers everything in pattern fitting, then moves to drafting a bodice and skirt block.
Private fitting session
One to one if the fitting problem is complex or you would rather not be measured in a group. Bring a garment that does not fit and we will diagnose the adjustment on the spot.

Why Students Choose Us
Fit is diagnosed from measurements, not guesswork
You take a full set of body measurements and compare them to the pattern's finished measurements. The adjustments follow from the numbers, not from looking at a garment and hoping.
You test in cheap fabric first
Every fitted garment gets a toile in calico before the real fabric is cut. This is the habit that separates garments that fit from garments that nearly fit.
Your blocks belong to you
A drafted bodice and skirt block, adjusted to your measurements, is the foundation for every future garment. It is the single most useful thing you can produce in a sewing class.
Fitting for Austin bodies
Commercial patterns are overwhelmingly drafted for a narrow range of bodies, and most grading between sizes is done by scaling up or down uniformly. That means anyone whose proportions differ from the standard, which is most people, ends up with a garment that fits in some places and not others.
Austin's sewing community skews toward people who sew specifically because ready to wear does not work for them. That makes fitting and drafting skills genuinely valuable here rather than academic, because they solve the problem that brought most students to sewing in the first place.
Common Questions
What experience do I need for pattern drafting?
You should be comfortable sewing a garment from a commercial pattern. If you have not done that yet, take our garment construction class first.
Will this fix the fact that patterns never fit me?
Yes, that is exactly what this class is for. We teach you to measure your body, compare to the pattern, and make the specific adjustments that produce a fit.
What is a toile?
A test garment sewn in cheap fabric. You fit it on your body, mark the corrections, and transfer them back to the pattern before cutting the real fabric.
Can I draft a pattern from scratch for my own design?
The class teaches bodice and skirt blocks. From those you can develop your own designs. For complex designs such as a tailored jacket, a private lesson is the better format.
Do I need to buy any tools?
A clear ruler, a French curve, and pattern paper are useful, but all are available in class. We will tell you exactly what to buy if you want your own set.
